Green Chaetomorpha

Green Chaetomorpha, commonly referred to as “Chaeto” or “Chaetomorpha,” is a popular type of marine algae used in saltwater aquariums, particularly in refugiums. This algae is highly valued for its ability to improve water quality and provide a natural habitat for beneficial microorganisms. Chaeto is excellent for nutrient export, as it absorbs nitrates and phosphates from the water, helping to reduce the levels of these harmful substances and preventing algae blooms. Through photosynthesis, Chaeto releases oxygen into the water, which benefits the overall health of the aquarium environment. The dense structure of Chaeto provides a habitat for copepods, amphipods, and other beneficial microorganisms, which can serve as a natural food source for fish and corals.

Description

While the anemone derives much of its nutrition from light, supplemental feedings of meaty foods such as shrimp, fish, or specialized anemone food can promote growth and health. Feed once or twice a week.

  • Lighting: Chaeto requires moderate to high lighting to thrive. It should be placed in a refugium or area of the tank with sufficient light, preferably using LED or fluorescent lights designed for plant growth.
  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal for Chaeto, as it helps to keep the algae clean and free from detritus. Proper water movement also ensures that nutrients are evenly distributed for optimal growth.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-25°C)
    • Salinity: 1.023-1.025 SG
    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Nitrate: Preferably below 10 ppm for the rest of the tank, but Chaeto can thrive in higher nitrate conditions.
