Red Bubble Tip Anemone

The Red Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) is a popular and captivating addition to saltwater aquariums, known for its vibrant colors and unique appearance. This type of Anemone displays a striking red or reddish-orange coloration that can vary in intensity. Its tentacles often have bubble-like tips, giving it a distinctive and appealing look. The anemone’s tentacles can range from elongated and thin to short and bulbous, depending on factors like water flow and lighting conditions.

When fully expanded, the anemone can reach sizes of up to 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter, though most individuals are smaller in home aquariums. In the wild, Red Bubble Tip Anemones are found in shallow coral reefs, attaching themselves to rocks or coral where they receive plenty of light and moderate water flow.

Description

While the anemone derives much of its nutrition from light, supplemental feedings of meaty foods such as shrimp, fish, or specialized anemone food can promote growth and health. Feed once or twice a week.

  • Lighting: Strong, quality lighting is essential, as anemones rely on photosynthesis for much of their energy, thanks to the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within their tissues.
  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal. Too much flow can cause the anemone to retract its tentacles, while too little can result in detritus accumulation around its base.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
    • Salinity: 1.024-1.026 SG
    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Nitrate: Less than 10 ppm
    • Phosphate: Less than 0.03 ppm
