Island Fish and Scale was back at Walt Whitman High School Marine Research Program to inspire and learn with this year’s researchers from Maplewood Elementary School. This excellent program allows young students to immerse themselves in marine life, offering a hands-on, up-close learning experience that leaves a lasting impression and education about aquatic animals.
The day was filled with excitement and curiosity as the students explored the fascinating world of marine creatures. They had the chance to hold cleaning shrimp 🦐 and sea stars ⭐️, marveling at these incredible animals’ unique features and behaviors. One of the highlights was learning about fragging corals 🪸, an essential technique for promoting coral growth and maintaining healthy reefs. Through these activities, the students gained a deeper understanding of the critical roles these sea creatures play in supporting the biodiversity of our marine ecosystems.
The enthusiasm of the Maplewood Elementary School students was palpable, especially when they eagerly asked questions about the diet and habitats of various fish, corals, and invertebrates. Their inquisitive nature shone as they sought to understand how to build thriving environments for these creatures in aquarium settings. It was a joy to see their faces light up with each new piece of knowledge, and we were delighted to share our expertise with them
